A Shipwreck A Castaway is a Pop Punk/Hardcore band from Riverside, CA who recently released an acoustic EP, entitled The Home Life, on Anchor Eighty Four Records. The band is also currently working on their debut full-length album, due out this year. We recently caught up with the band's drummer, Robby Stilwell, to discuss the above and much more!

Firstly, can you state your name and role in the band?

Robby: My name is Robby Stilwell and I'm the drummer and booking/press representative for A Shipwreck A Castaway.

The band started out in 2007, but tell us how you guys got together and chose the band name. I'm assuming you are/were fans of Chiodos?

Robby: It started as four of us just jamming in different garage bands and deciding to start something together in our senior year of High school. We were huge fans, they were a gateway band for us in High school and had a huge influence on our first EP. As for our name well we wrote a few songs for our first show but we were still nameless right up until that morning of thew show when I suggested the name for a temporary title... and I guess it just stuck haha.

Back in August 2010 the band signed with Los Angeles' Anchor Eighty Four Records - what has it been like working with the label since then?

Robby: To say the least it has been great. Cody is a super down to earth guy who loves music and the associated scene. He is easy to work with and has become a good friend and someone we hope to work with for a long time. The label has helped us with publication, promotion, and contacts which has been very beneficial for ASAC.

So in 2011 the band released the Life In General EP, as well as the acoustic The Home Life EP. What was the overall reception to Life In General like? What are your favourite songs from the EP to play live?

Robby: Honestly it's been a mixed opinion kind of thing. It seems that most people have embraced it positively and given good feedback, but on the other hand we have has negative criticism on the loss of a heavy aspect that we had in older music. Life In General had taken a turn away from our old more Metal sound towards a more fast paced Pop Punk sound... this wasn't necessarily intentional but more so what just came out... it was a reflection of our personal music influences and kind of where we were in life. This EP is all about the struggles we face everyday in life and just how we react to... from songs about bad luck to having issues with anger... it's all about how you deal with what your dealt.

It was great to see new and old tracks on the acoustic EP, I really think it came out great. Was the release a last minute idea or something you had planned in advance? Tell us a little about the EP.

Robby: Thanks haha, kind of both actually. We recorded I've Got A Bad Feeling About This months ago as incentive for people we met on Warped Tour to follow up on our music and updates via Facebook. Cody from Anchor 84 suggested we just go for an album that was all acoustic. It was at first just Life In General tracks, then we decided to go with our first song ever written, Dear Anna. Then we decided to do two original acoustic tracks. I lost my Mom to Lou Gehrig's disease a few years back which hit me pretty hard, and we know that this kind of thing is something that everybody can relate to one way or another so we wanted to express those feelings in a song. Unspoken was written to embody those feelings and how we deal with them. The Home Life was written and is almost taboo for a touring band. You hear all these Pop Punk bands, including us, who write about the joys of tour and being out on the road, but in the back of your mind you still get that feeling of being homesick. We try to be as real as we can and just write about stuff we deal with and loving where we come from and missing the things back home is one of those things.

You guys also had a hometown release show for the EP - what was the turnout for this like? Did you end up seeing many ugly Christmas sweaters?

Robby: The release was a lot better than what we had hoped for actually. It was in a living room of a friend of ours, Adrian of My Enemies Her", the place was packed and yes, there were a good amount of ugly sweaters haha. It was great to see people sing along with us... and it was really personal... we like to consider people our friends not just fans... this show really solidified that. It was great.

I understand the band is also working on its debut full-length set to be released this year - How's the progress on this coming along? When could we possibly expect a release or new material?

Robby: Great, we are pumping out songs like Octomom pumped out kids. The goal is to release it in 2012, so as far as that goes that is the best idea I have right now. We plan to release a teaser of some sort within the next few months so keep an eye out!

Nick also engineered, mixed, and mastered the acoustic tracks at his own studio - what was this experience like in comparison to hiring out a studio? Will you guys be recording here in the future, too?

Robby: We've always felt like studios that we have done work with are only waiting for you to pay them and don't really care what your music comes out like at the end of your session. It's like I tell any band contemplating working with him, Nick actually cares about your band and your music... he puts in work stresses on making it sound the best he can. We do pre-production with him, and may possibly do some tracking for the full length with him. If you are looking for an affordable, enjoyable recording experience with someone who knows music... I'd say go with Nick Mac studios.

Aside from working on the full-length album, what other plans does the band have for this year?

Robby: Shows, shows, and more shows. We are going to be getting out to some of the areas we hit while at Warped Tour to follow up as well as promoting at and hopefully playing some of the Warped tour dates this year.

Thanks for doing this, is there anything else you'd like to mention?

Robby: No problem, this is a great website and we hope to work with you guys more in the future! Pretty much just go to shows, support local bands, buy merch from them, and don't listen to dubstep. Hey guys. Just wanted to take a second to clear the air with what's going on with us.

I personally am at a super heavy point in my life. Got a little bit going on health wise that somewhat inhibits me from performing constantly for the time being. We all know doctors, specialists, and surgeries are all super expensive and dudes in bands don't usually have health insurance. I'm working on getting this under control.

I also received the worst news of my life a few weeks ago involving a very close family member and best friend of mine. This shit is heavy. It's been hard think anything productive lately.

So to set the record straight... We are NOT breaking up. We aren't on a hiatus.. I am just personally in a rough patch, but I promise you all I am a fighter.

We are working on the new record as we speak. We're in love with the music and I have a lot to get off my chest.. So be ready.

Our latest EP "Give Up. Give In" will be out on vinyl soon and well be announcing some shows soon as well!

You guys are all my dear friends so I felt it very needed to let you in on what's going on. Please keep KL and all of my family in your prayers and thoughts. Thank you for all of your support!

ATTENTION: We have been going through some member and line up changes recently. Josh Davis has joined the band and is playing bass, and Jake Weber is on drums now, which in turn means Cray has moved to vocals. Because of this, we have also decided that the name "Facts of Life" is no longer suiting... We have decided to change the name to GIVE AND TAKE. We feel as though this is going to be a big step forward for the band and we are extremely excited to start playing shows with the new line up. We will play the last few shows we have booked under "Facts of Life" and after that, the name change will be official. Also, we will be working our new songs into the set, and again, after the name change, we will no longer play our old songs. Hopefully, you all will see how this is a positive change and continue to support us and our music!

From there we fly to Europe to do 3 festivals including Groezrock and a few club shows. After that, nothing's been officially announced yet but there will be more shows in the US and then back to Europe for more festivals. We'll be on tour all year but we'll definitely break in the winter to record the new album.

Half Hearted Hero is a Pop Punk/Hardcore band from New Bedford, MA who formed in 2005. Though they've been together for years, the band is only now receiving the amount of attention they deserve. The band also recently released a new split with Deadhorse on Animal Style Records and today we bring you an exclusive interview with the band's guitarist, AJ. Firstly, can you state your name and role in the band?

AJ: I'm AJ, I play guitar.

So you guys have been around for years, but tell us how the band was formed and how the name was chosen.

AJ: We formed in late 2005. Meyer and Anthony had been writing music together for years. Ian and Clinton had been jamming. Meyer met Ian and asked him how fast he could play. I came along later. The name doesn't really mean much. To be honest, it was probably the coolest thing we could think of as freshman/sophomores in high school.

Having said that, I feel like the band has only recently begun gaining the amount of exposure it deserves, this year. How much has being on Animal Style Records contributed to this? Do you feel the scene is evolving?

AJ: Matt at Animal Style Records has been great to us, helping us meet new people and get our name out there. A few friends at AbsolutePunk.net have helped us reach new people as well. The scene is always evolving. Pop Punk had an incredible year in 2011, I'm just not sure we fit the mold for most people. We sound quite a bit different than the popular Pop Punk bands right now.

Moving on, 2011 saw 2 releases from the band, the Running Water EP and split with Deadhorse. Was this always the plan or were the split songs left over from the EP? What has the reception to the songs been like?

AJ: We wrote and recorded everything off of Running Water and the split at the same time. We just felt that the two split songs had a different feel than the others, so we kept them off the EP and held onto them. We asked Animal Style if he liked them and wanted to use them and he hooked us up with Deadhorse, who of course if absolutely incredible.

What would you say were the most noticeable differences or changes when writing and recording these releases, as opposed to the first EP and album?

AJ: Well as for the writing process, we had contributions from everyone. Each one of us had a hand in writing which was a departure from our earlier work. We also recorded with our other guitarist Clinton, which gave us the time and freedom to approach it the way we wanted.

Are there currently any plans or hopes for some sort of new release on 2012?

AJ: We always have songs in the works, so I would definitely be on the lookout for a 2012 release.

Personally, I've always found Half Hearted Hero's blend of Melodic Hardcore and Pop Punk flawless, not to mention the expressive lyrics that accompany the music. Walk us through the typical process of composing a HHH song. Does the music come before the lyrics or vice versa?

AJ: Thanks for the kind words! To be honest, neither comes first. Anthony writes 100% of our lyrics, and he's always got a notebook full of songs and ideas. When any of us has a musical idea for a song - riff, chord progression, whatever - we sit down as a band and hash it out. We write the rest of the song, expand on the ideas and talk about it. Anthony rummages through his lyrics and finds the song that fits the mood and we work it out. There are exceptions to the norm but that's the typical process.

Musically and/or lyrically, what are some of the band's predominant influences?

AJ: Musically some of our biggest influences are Propagandhi, Owen, and The Full Blast. Lyrically we change from record to record. Religion and personal fulfillment influenced Running Water.

Now that the band is gaining more momentum, what other plans do you have for next year? Perhaps getting on the road?

AJ: We're hoping to tour as much as we possibly can. Unfortunately that's not as much as we'd like thanks to our school schedule.

What have you been listening to yourself lately? Care to make some recommendations?

AJ: Personally I've been playing a lot of Into It. Over It. - Proper lately. I slept super hard on that record. Jesu, Moving Mountains, and Owen all have fantastic new records that need to be listened to.
